Tamil Nadu Custodial Death Case: Woman Constable’s Testimony Leads to Death Sentence for 9 Policemen

A shocking story has come out from Tamil Nadu where the testimony of a woman constable led to death sentences for nine policemen. When everyone was afraid to speak against the police, she told the court,
“Sir, I will tell you everything.”

This is the story of then Head Constable S. Revathi, whose courage played a crucial role in bringing justice. Despite threats and pressure from the system, she chose to speak the truth. The case dates back to 2020, but the verdict was delivered recently on April 7, 2026.

This was a double murder case involving the deaths of a father and son. They were taken into police custody and brutally tortured. The level of violence was so extreme that it became impossible to control the bleeding, and both of them eventually died. In this case, nine policemen from Tamil Nadu were found guilty and sentenced to death.

However, the case might never have reached this stage if junior police official S. Revathi had not shown courage. She was on duty at a police station in Tuticorin district when the brutality against P. Jeyaraj and his son J. Bennicks crossed all limits.

Both were detained in 2020 on the grounds of violating Covid lockdown rules. However, later a CBI investigation revealed that they had not violated any such rules.

This was essentially a case of police arrogance. In this situation, Head Constable Revathi became an approver, meaning a government witness. She recorded her statement before the magistrate, even though she had no assurance about her own safety, her family’s safety, or even her job.

when judicial magistrate MS Bharathi Dasan arrived for the inquiry, Revathi told him,
“Sir, I will tell you everything in detail, the truth that is being hidden. But I am a mother of two young daughters. Can you guarantee the safety of my children and my job?”

After this, Revathi described the entire incident minute by minute before the magistrate. She explained how Jeyaraj and Bennicks were continuously beaten, suffered multiple injuries, and were later sent to judicial custody. Within a few days, both of them died.

Without any fear, Revathi identified the accused policemen seen in CCTV footage, helping to prove that they were present at the scene. According to her testimony, the policemen used whatever they could find to beat the father and son. They even attacked their private parts with boots.

She said that when she reached the station around 8:50 PM, she could hear someone screaming and crying from inside,
“Amma, it hurts… please leave me… I made a mistake.”
At the same time, the voice of Sub-Inspector Balakrishnan was also heard shouting,
“How dare you create a scene in the police station?”

Revathi said that when she arrived, the victim’s body was covered in blood. After the beating, the inspector made the injured person clean his own blood from the floor.

When both men became semi-conscious due to the torture, Revathi tried to offer them coffee, but the accused policemen snatched it away and threw it. At one point, both victims were stripped of their clothes and their hands were tied. Unable to bear the sight, Revathi left the room.

Whatever she witnessed, she reported everything to the magistrate. She was threatened and intimidated. The atmosphere was so tense that guards had to be posted outside the inquiry room. Police personnel gathered outside the station and tried to disrupt the process.

Due to fear, Revathi initially hesitated to sign her statement. Only after being assured of protection did she sign it. Justice Bharathi Dasan noted in his report that the environment was not safe, and even court staff were being threatened by the police.

Despite all this, Revathi stood firm. Testifying against her own colleagues was not an easy step. In 2020, while speaking to The News Minute, she said,
“I do not want to be harassed by my senior officers.”

Later, on the orders of the Madras High Court, she was provided protection.

Today, because of her courage and decision to speak the truth, nine policemen have been sentenced to death in this case.
